Golf-ball hail at 7,000 feet. Documented before the snow.

The October 20–21 storm bruised shingles and creased ridges across Flagstaff and the Rim — we photograph it now, because once it snows the evidence is gone until spring.

Storm Damage & Insurance Claim FAQs

Hail thresholds, first steps, and why timing matters — expand any question to dive deeper.

Hail that is quarter-sized (quarter‑size ≈ 1 inch = severe) is generally considered the threshold where functional damage to asphalt shingles begins. However, size is not the only factor.

  • Wind Speed: If accompanied by high winds, even smaller hail (dime or nickel-sized) can be driven hard enough to bruise shingles and cause granule loss.

  • Roof Age: Older shingles become brittle over time and can be damaged by smaller hailstones that would bounce off a brand-new roof.

  • Soft Metals: Even small hail often dents soft metals like gutters, downspouts, and vents. If you see dents on these items, it is a strong indicator that your roof may also have sustained damage.

If you see hail the size of a quarter or larger, or notice dents on your gutters, schedule a professional inspection to be sure.

George of PRQ Exteriors stopped at my mom’s house and checked her roof for hail damage. There was no cost and he took photos and showed her that her roof was fine. As we chatted I told him our roof needed looked at. He drove down to my house and checked my roof. He sent me photos of my roof and showed places where the hail had hit. Fortunately, our roof was fine and we didn’t need any repairs. I very much appreciated George’s manner. He wasn’t pushy. He just wanted to check our roofs to see if they needed repairs. Because we didn’t need repairs he just gave us information for future needs. I’ve had a few people knock on my door since this last hail storm and George is the first person I felt comfortable enough with to have him check our roof.

Im so excited to work with prq exteriors. Ive had a few roofers take a look at my roof and most were telling me they didnt find enough damage to file an insurance claim for my hail damage. But PRQ was able to find the damage and got my claim approved that was missed by others. So grateful for their diligence.

Was a pleasure working with Mike. He gave us an honest assessment of our roof after a hailstorm (he indicated the roof was totally fine). Other roofing contractors were insisting that it needed replacement. We were glad to work with Mike knowing he would tell us the truth and not make us have to get another roof even if it benefitted his company monetarily. Thanks again Mike!

If you’re looking for roofing services done right, choose PRQ. Austion and the PRQ team are truly at the top of their game. Austion is extremely helpful, easy to talk to, and has your best interests at heart. The team completed a full roof replacement during a particularly windy day and took extra steps to protect the property as well as neighboring properties. They completed the job quickly and safely, and went the extra mile during cleanup. It’s clear PRQ takes a lot of pride in their work and truly cares about their customers. Cannot recommend PRQ more.

PRQ Exteriors did a great job on the new roof. I was hesitant at first to get my roof checked out, but I’m glad I did since there was significant damage to my roof by the fairly recent hail storm. The insurance company paid the vast majority of the roof replacement cost, even though it was an older roof. The representatives guided me through the process of insurance claims, timelines, inspections; and it was fairly painless. I’m glad they were referred to me when they were, so I was still able to file the insurance claim in time.

PRQ was recommended by my insurance carrier when it was discovered that hail caused significant damage to my roof. I have not had to deal with a project of this magnitude in many years, so I accepted the recommendation. PRQ not only met, but exceeded all expectations. Once the insurance company approved the claim, PRQ's Account Manager, Kyle Transue, took over and virtually handled everything else from there on. I was kept aware of the status and while providing input as needed, otherwise, I simply watched a complex project— remove/restore solar panels, remove/replace shingles, repair gutters and screens, etc.—get completed to my full satisfaction. I would recommend PRQ to anyone desiring expedient, competent, and professional service.

We are very pleased with our new roof. The whole crew at PRQ was knowledgeable and easy to work with. They worked with our insurance company to get our claim approval, even coming back to reinspect several times with the insurance adjusters. After the roof was finished they double checked and made sure all the nails and debris had been cleaned up. Their dedication to service was awesome!

Hail & storm damage on the Rim

The October 20–21 storms, the 2010 Bellemont tornadoes, and how a northern Arizona storm claim is documented before winter hides it.

  • October 20–21, 2026 across northern Arizona

Hail the size of golf balls crossed the region on October 20 and 21, with the National Weather Service warning of 2- to 3-inch stones; wind brought trees down in Flagstaff and felled a few dozen ponderosa pines over 30 feet tall in the Coconino National Forest northwest of town. A tornado warning near Sedona on October 22 carried quarter-size hail, a possible tornado damaged homes in Heber-Overgaard the evening of the 21st, and a flood watch stood through the week with 1 to 3 inches of rain forecast. It was a wind, hail, and water event at once.

  • This region has done this before

On October 6, 2010, tornadoes struck Bellemont west of Flagstaff, derailing 28 rail cars and leaving homes uninhabitable — the National Weather Service rated the forest damage south of town EF-2. That outbreak, and the Phoenix hailstorm the day before it, were the last time Arizona saw tornado watches until October 2026. Northern Arizona is not out of the path; it is just quiet for long stretches.

  • Hail hides under snow

Hail bruising on an asphalt shingle is a soft spot where the granules are knocked loose and the mat is exposed. It is hard to see from the ground in October and impossible to see under two feet of snow in December. Freeze-thaw then works the bruise into a leak by spring, when the storm date is a memory and the carrier calls it wear. We document the bruising now, with dated photographs, so the claim is tied to October 20.

  • Documented, then dried in — in that order

Arizona's storm-contract law doesn't allow repair work to begin until the insurer has approved or denied the claim, except what's needed to prevent further loss. On the Rim that exception matters: a wind-opened roof with snow coming needs a dry-in that day. We do the emergency protection, photograph everything before and after, and hold the permanent repair for the carrier's decision.
