Hail that is quarter-sized (quarter‑size ≈ 1 inch = severe) is generally considered the threshold where functional damage to asphalt shingles begins. However, size is not the only factor.
Wind Speed: If accompanied by high winds, even smaller hail (dime or nickel-sized) can be driven hard enough to bruise shingles and cause granule loss.
Roof Age: Older shingles become brittle over time and can be damaged by smaller hailstones that would bounce off a brand-new roof.
Soft Metals: Even small hail often dents soft metals like gutters, downspouts, and vents. If you see dents on these items, it is a strong indicator that your roof may also have sustained damage.
