Common Issues:

A denial isn’t the final word.

Roof Insurance Claim FAQs

Filing deadlines, ACV vs. RCV, and what to do after a denial — expand any question to dive deeper.

Most insurance policies in Colorado enforce a 1-year deadline from date of loss to file an insurance claim for hail damage. This can vary by policy, so it is important to check with your insurance provider first for your specific circumstance.

George of PRQ Exteriors stopped at my mom’s house and checked her roof for hail damage. There was no cost and he took photos and showed her that her roof was fine. As we chatted I told him our roof needed looked at. He drove down to my house and checked my roof. He sent me photos of my roof and showed places where the hail had hit. Fortunately, our roof was fine and we didn’t need any repairs. I very much appreciated George’s manner. He wasn’t pushy. He just wanted to check our roofs to see if they needed repairs. Because we didn’t need repairs he just gave us information for future needs. I’ve had a few people knock on my door since this last hail storm and George is the first person I felt comfortable enough with to have him check our roof.

Im so excited to work with prq exteriors. Ive had a few roofers take a look at my roof and most were telling me they didnt find enough damage to file an insurance claim for my hail damage. But PRQ was able to find the damage and got my claim approved that was missed by others. So grateful for their diligence.

Roof insurance claims under Utah law

Utah gives homeowners specific protections on a storm claim. Most people find out about them too late — here they are.

  • You can cancel if your insurer denies the claim

Utah Code § 13-50-202 lets you cancel a repair contract when the contractor knew the work would be paid from insurance, your carrier then denies any part of that claim, and you mail notice within five business days of receiving the written denial. You are not locked into a roof you signed for on the assumption it would be covered — but the five-day clock is real.

  • Assigning your benefits has rules attached

If a contractor asks you to sign over your insurance benefits, Utah Code § 13-50-301 requires that assignment to carry an itemized description of the work, the total you agreed to pay, a statement that the contractor has made no assurances your policy will fully cover the loss, and a capitalized 14-point warning that you are giving up rights under your policy. It must reach your insurer within five business days, and it cannot cut your mortgage company out or block your insurer from talking to you.

  • “We will cover your deductible” is illegal here

Utah Code § 13-50-302 prohibits a residential contractor from rebating or offering to rebate any portion of an insurance deductible as an inducement. A rebate includes any allowance or discount against charged fees. § 13-50-303 then requires that prohibition to be printed on the estimate in capitalized 14-point type — so the offer and the notice contradicting it usually sit on the same page.

  • We document the loss; we do not adjust it

Our job on a Wasatch Front claim is evidence: dated photos of hail bruising and 78 mph wind creasing, the flashing and vent detail, and a scope that matches what the September 18 storm actually did. That is what an adjuster can act on — and what a supplement rests on when the first scope comes back short.
