Storm Damage & Insurance Claim FAQs

Hail thresholds, first steps, and why timing matters — expand any question to dive deeper.

Hail that is quarter-sized (quarter‑size ≈ 1 inch = severe) is generally considered the threshold where functional damage to asphalt shingles begins. However, size is not the only factor.

  • Wind Speed: If accompanied by high winds, even smaller hail (dime or nickel-sized) can be driven hard enough to bruise shingles and cause granule loss.

  • Roof Age: Older shingles become brittle over time and can be damaged by smaller hailstones that would bounce off a brand-new roof.

  • Soft Metals: Even small hail often dents soft metals like gutters, downspouts, and vents. If you see dents on these items, it is a strong indicator that your roof may also have sustained damage.

If you see hail the size of a quarter or larger, or notice dents on your gutters, schedule a professional inspection to be sure.

George of PRQ Exteriors stopped at my mom’s house and checked her roof for hail damage. There was no cost and he took photos and showed her that her roof was fine. As we chatted I told him our roof needed looked at. He drove down to my house and checked my roof. He sent me photos of my roof and showed places where the hail had hit. Fortunately, our roof was fine and we didn’t need any repairs. I very much appreciated George’s manner. He wasn’t pushy. He just wanted to check our roofs to see if they needed repairs. Because we didn’t need repairs he just gave us information for future needs. I’ve had a few people knock on my door since this last hail storm and George is the first person I felt comfortable enough with to have him check our roof.

Im so excited to work with prq exteriors. Ive had a few roofers take a look at my roof and most were telling me they didnt find enough damage to file an insurance claim for my hail damage. But PRQ was able to find the damage and got my claim approved that was missed by others. So grateful for their diligence.

Hail & storm damage along the Wasatch Front

What the September 18 storm actually did to Wasatch Front roofs — and how a Utah storm claim gets handled correctly.

  • September 18, 2026: wind and hail in the same hour

The National Weather Service recorded a peak 78 mph gust near Legacy Highway in West Bountiful, 50–65 mph across the areas north of Salt Lake County, golf-ball and ping-pong-size hail, and confirmed a tornado on the ridgeline west of Francis Peak above Fruit Heights just after 1:50 p.m. — the NWS said video showed rotation reaching the ground and debris lofted into the air. Davis, Weber, and Morgan county roofs took wind and impact damage in a single afternoon.

  • Wind damage and hail damage do not look alike

Hail leaves bruising — soft, mat-exposing impact points that often read as nothing from the ground. Wind at 78 mph lifts and creases shingles, breaks seal strips, and peels ridge caps and flashing without necessarily removing a single shingle. A claim written for one and not the other leaves money and future leaks on the table, so we document both signatures separately.

  • Storm chasers follow a storm like this

A confirmed tornado and a 78 mph gust bring out-of-state crews into Davis and Weber counties within days. Utah Code § 13-50-302 bars any residential contractor from rebating or offering to rebate any part of your deductible as an inducement — so “we will cover the deductible” is not a discount, it is a violation. Your only cost is the deductible you already owe.

  • Document before the next storm writes over it

Utah's hail season runs into a wet fall and then snow. Once a second storm crosses the same roof, separating September's damage from November's becomes an argument you are having with an adjuster rather than a fact you can show. We inspect and photo-document now so the claim rests on a dated record.

  • What counts as repair work under Utah law

Utah Code § 13-50-102 defines the repair work these rules govern as work to siding, gutters, a roof system, or a window system to repair damage caused by wind or hail — and defines the roof system to include coverings, sheathing, weatherproofing, framing, ventilation, and insulation. A storm claim is rarely just shingles, and the statute is written that way for a reason.
